Authorizer Summit and Bootcamp
September 13, 2021 - September 16, 2021
The Florida Authorizer Summit is Florida’s first annual gathering of state-wide authorizing professionals. This virtual summit is for district staff, leadership, and school board members who oversee or are involved in the daily hands-on work involved in the process of authorizing. Join your peers for an opportunity to network, discuss emerging issues, share best practices, and focus on how charter school authorizers impact quality educational experiences in their communities.
Authorizer Bootcamp is a virtual summit component new authorizers will not want to miss. This course was developed specifically for Florida authorizers, by Florida authorizers. Through the co-facilitation of experienced Florida authorizers you will learn about the processes, monitoring and oversight, and the legislation that guides Florida authorizing practices. Day 1 – During the first day of New Authorizer Bootcamp we will lay the foundation for what it means to be a quality charter school authorizer in the state. We will cover Florida charter law, the Principles & Standards for Quality Charter School Authorizing, and hear from experienced authorizers from a variety of districts on what authorizing looks like on the ground. Day 2 – Through three module we will address the authorizers’ responsibilities for receiving and reviewing applications for new charter schools and making decisions about approval or denial. Topics covered within the application process include an in-depth look at the FDOE standard application and evaluation instrument as well as a discussion about how to handle the appeals process. Day 3 – Day 3 of Bootcamp will focus on how to utilize the Florida standard contract and provide guidance on how to navigate the contract negotiation process. From there we will cover the responsibilities of an authorizer to monitor schools in their portfolio with a specific focus on site visits and annual reports. Day 4 – During the final day of Bootcamp, we will discuss the charter renewal process and technical assistance for potential applicants. We will also discuss the authorizer’s role in ensuring schools are effectively serving students with disabilities and English learners
